With the approach of Maggie's sixteenth birthday, Maxwell books the Guggenheim Museum for the big affair. Realizing it's nothing like what Maggie has in mind, Fran breaks the news to Maxwell. But when Fran is given responsibility for planning the affair at a nightclub owned by her Aunt Frieda, Maggie begins to wonder if her father's plan might not be best after all. After convincing Maggie that a 70s disco party at the club would be just the thing, Fran insists that a long-standing family feud between Frieda and her mother won't disrupt their plans. But when they stop by Sylvia's, Fran and Maggie gets a taste of just how angry she still is with her estranged sister-in-law. With the feud worse then she thought, Fran turns to Maxwell for help, only to find that he's unable to reschedule the museum for the party. So she arranges for Frieda and Sylvia to meet and, when they arrive at the Sheffield home, sparks fly! Undaunted by their quarreling, Fran reminds Sylvia and Frieda of all the good times they have had eventually brings the two women back together again in time for Maggie's party. But when Fran's casual remark re-ignites their feud, Frieda and Sylvia are again on the warpath. Though Fran tries making peace, she only succeeds in starting a food fight. And while Maxwell is certain that it's ruined the affair, he's surprised to discover that Maggie and her friends consider the food fight a wild finale to a great party.

Meanwhile, Maxwell is despondent over not being invited to attend a weekend retreat with President Clinton. Without telling her about the bet, Noel talks Fran into letting him coach her for the "Jeopardy" exam. But once they get started, Noels realizes he's in for more than he bargained for. Warned that C.C.'s brother is interested in more than just her mind, Fran accuses Maxwell of being jealous and vows to pass the test. Upon learning of the wager, Maxwell is determined to tell Fran to spare her any more humiliation -- but is shocked to discover she's going to be on the show. Unaware that a new studio head arranged for Fran be put on the show, C.C. raises the stakes in her bet with Noel. Although Maxwell is determined to spare her the embarrassment of a loss on national TV, Fran insists on going through with it. And after falling badly behind at first, a series of right answers put Fran into the final round, where she's crowned "Jeopardy" champion. Finally, proud of her performance even after losing her first title defense, Fran manages to get Maxwell his Renaissance Weekend invitation from their new neighbor, the President's brother Roger.

Meanwhile, as Maggie tries a new perfume to attract a boy and Brighton exchanges anonymous love notes with a girl at school, C.C. decides to make a play for Maxwell. As Brighton discovers the unfortunate truth about his dream girl, Fran decides to take Maxwell's advice and tell Lenny the truth about herself. But when her big date at the Russian Tea Room gives Fran second thoughts, Maxwell intervenes to keep the nervous nanny on track. Meanwhile, Niles decides to teach C.C. a lesson about seducing his boss. As they wait for Lenny to arrive, Maxwell does his best to keep Fran relaxed. But when a handsome man arrives at the restaurant, Fran detects a hint of jealousy in Maxwell, even though he turns out not to be her date. However, Fran then gets a note from Lenny claiming he left after realizing he could never compete with the man she was already with. But was it Maxwell or the one she mistook for her pen pal? Finally, upon returning home, Fran and Maxwell catch Niles and C.C. being sexually aroused by their mutual hatred for one another.

Meanwhile, Brighton struggles to beat his dad at chess just once as Gracie fends off her latest suitor at school -- one who shows his affection by throwing food. When Fran finally says yes, Jules asks her to pick out the most beautiful engagement ring money can buy. However, when Jules takes it outside the exclusive jewelry store to examine it in the sunlight and disappears, Fran realizes she's been duped by a notorious con artist. And though she arrives to console her daughter, it isn't long before Sylvia and Fran are arguing over who's to blame for the disaster. Although Grace suggests family therapy, the doctor finds they are beyond her abilities. However, once Yetta clears the air with some revelations about the family history, Fran and Sylvia reconcile. Meanwhile, Fran ruins Brighton's chances to finally beat his dad as Grace announces that she's breaking up with Todd before she gets hurt. And with Jules out of the way, Maxwell and Fran are again free to continue their unconscious courtship.

5. Val's Apartment

With Fran's duties to the children keeping her from getting out, Sylvia starts nagging about how they interfere with her finding a husband. But it's Maxwell's interruption at the end of her latest date that finally pushes Fran to act. Insisting that she doesn't need to live with the family in order to perform her duties, Fran accepts his challenge to move in with Val. It isn't long before Fran realizes she may have made a big mistake. In addition to the tiny apartment's size and it's persistent roaches, there's the fact that all of the single men Val bragged about are gay. Then she's late for her first day at work. Yet, despite Maxwell's insistence that everything was fine in her absence, he's forced to admit that caring for the children on his own each night is more than even he bargained for. Her first Saturday night off work in her new apartment makes Fran realize that she's got to do something fast. And even though he doesn't want to admit it, Maxwell turns to Niles for any suggestions on how to get her to move back. So he enlists Sylvia in a scheme to force Fran to move back in, unaware that the nanny already talked her mother into doing the same for her.

Before long, Sidney has Maxwell acting younger than ever as she gets his name in all the right magazines and newspapers. And Fran begins to see her own relationship with him waning as Maxwell falls head over heels in love. To celebrate Sidney's success, Maxwell arranges to meet her for what he's sure will be a romantic dinner at the Rainbow Room. But when the publicist mistakenly shows up at the Sheffield's instead, Fran learns her boss has made a big mistake when Sidney says she's gay. To save Maxwell from any more embarrassment, Fran hurries to the restaurant to break the news about Sidney. But when the faulty elevator suddenly strands them between floors, Maxwell discovers that Fran has also made his infatuation with Sidney known. Finally, as Maxwell ponders giving up on dating just as quickly as he started, Fran insists that the right woman is out there...somewhere.

So when Gracie begins to worry about her nanny's uncontrollable habit, she convinces Maxwell to get help for Fran's addiction. Meanwhile, when Danny's bride-to-be wants her fired, Val suddenly finds herself out of a job and hosting Tupperware parties, including one at the Sheffield's. After checking into a program for shopping addicts, Fran begins her recovery by apologizing to everyone for the trouble she's caused. But when she balks at cutting up her credit cards, Maxwell and Niles are forced to get tough. Though the painful withdrawal convinces Fran that she'll never make it, Maxwell is ready to help in whatever way he can -- especially after he notices his wallet and credit cards are missing. After making it through her first twenty-four hours without buying anything, Fran must face the ordeal of Val's Tupperware party. And while she does okay at first, the surprise arrival of Danny's pregnant fiancée sends her over the edge. Realizing she's lifted Niles' wallet, Maxwell then finds Fran at an outlet store where he convinces her that the right man is out there...someplace

As Maxwell and C.C prepare for a weekend business trip to Boston, Fran heads off to a singles party where she and Val are hoping to meet some men. Coming home early and empty-handed, they then decide the only way to meet guys is with a party of their own. When Niles convinces Maxwell to take his children to Boston, Maggie balks because she has concert tickets. So while Fran convinces her boss to let his oldest daughter stay home for the weekend, C.C is aghast to find her weekend with Maxwell will not be one they can spend alone. When Val learns that the restaurant she and Fran rented for their party has burned down, they decide to use the Sheffield mansion instead. And though things get off to a good start, Fran is arrested by a handsome undercover policemen for operating without a business license. Upon returning to a house in shambles, Fran gets yet another unpleasant surprise when Maxwell comes home a day early and assumes the party and its aftermath were Maggie's doing. Told that Fran would have been fired for pulling such a stunt, Maggie accepts responsibility for the party in order to save the nanny's job. Not wanting Maggie to miss her concert, Fran confesses before heading off to her court date. After Niles convinces him just how good Fran has been for the children, Maxwell has second thoughts about letting her go and appears in court on her behalf. As a result, he's ordered to pay Fran's fine before being sent home.

After an unpleasant run-in at the florist, Fran gets set for the arrival of Maxwell's mother, Elizabeth. And though Maxwell is dreading the visit, Fran is looking forward to making the best impression possible. However, things get off to a rocky start when Fran discovers the woman she argued with at the florist is none other than Elizabeth Sheffield. Well aware of just how much she dislikes Fran, C.C. does her best to fuel Elizabeth's growing animosity toward the nanny. However, it's when she insists that Fran be fired that Maxwell draws the line. In the midst of a heated argument with his mother, Maxwell does just what he knows will upset her most -- he proposes to Fran! And while Maxwell hopes Fran didn't take him too seriously, she's is already planning the wedding with Sylvia and Val. When Val's persistent questioning clarifies what really happened, Fran realizes that she's going to have to put an end to the marriage before it starts. First she calls Maxwell to the apartment to toy with him for awhile. Then, once Elizabeth arrives, she forces Maxwell to admit to what he's done. And while the showdown thaws the frosty relationship between Maxwell and his mother, it also means Fran and her boss won't be getting married anytime soon.

10. Having his Baby

When Maxwell encourages her to go on a shopping spree, Fran suspects he's up to something. And it's the arrival of movie star Monica Baker at the Sheffield house that reveals his motive. Yet, between the picture she just received of her ex-fiancee's new baby son and Monica's status as single mom, Fran wonders if she'll ever be a parent, too. So, after revealing that she used a sperm bank to have her son, Monica encourages Fran to give it a try. After a visit to the sperm bank, Fran is ready to break the news to Maxwell. However, he gets the distinct impression that she's is counting on him to be the donor. While saying he'll give the idea some serious consideration, Maxwell then turns to Niles for help before telling Fran's mother, who's none too happy with her daughter's choice. When her own nanny takes ill, Monica threatens to cancel her business date with Maxwell. But when Fran offers to help out with some baby-sitting, Monica doesn't hesitate to accept. However, the experience as a single mom makes Fran realize she isn't yet cut out to care for an infant. And it's after telling Maxwell that she discovers he expected to be called on to be the father.

11. The Unkindest Cut

When her cousin has a new son, Fran pitches in to help Sylvia plan a Bris. And when Maggie complains that Brighton is bothering her with his video camera, Fran hires him to videotape the ceremony. Meanwhile, after finding a hidden copy of Maxwell's novel, Fran decides to see it published, regardless of what her boss has to say about it. It isn't until things are well underway at the Bris that Fran realizes Brighton has no idea about what's going on. So once the ritual circumcision gets underway, he faints and fails to capture the event on tape. Because she was the one hired him, Fran begins to question her own instincts. And a rejection letter for Maxwell's novel would seem to confirm this fear. But Fran's confidence in herself is soon restored when Brighton's tape is selected for "America's Wackiest Home Videos." While in Hollywood for Brighton's big TV appearance, Fran gets lost and lands right in the middle of the set of "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman." As a result, she arrives at the "Wackiest Videos" studio too late to see Brighton lose, albeit happily, to a pair of gorgeous teenage twins. Finally, back at home Fran tries to insure her perfect record by paying someone to publish Maxwell's book, only to have her boss find out.

12. The Kibbutz

After catching Maggie with her boyfriend, Maxwell decides it's time she was sent to a Swiss convent for a little vacation. Certain she'll only overreact upon hearing it from him, Maxwell asks Fran to tell Maggie the news. However, on Fran's advice Maggie agrees to get away to an Israeli kibbutz instead. Upon learning of the change in plans, Maxwell demands some answers from Fran. And when she tries explaining, Fran recalls her own teenage experience at a kibbutz. However, after her mother reminds her how much she hated life there, Fran suddenly realizes just why she remembers it so fondly. Recalling having lost her virginity at the kibbutz, Fran sets out to keep Maggie from going. Finding him and Maggie excited about the trip, she's forced to tell Maxwell the reason behind her sudden change of heart. So, not wanting to go back on his word, Maxwell lets Maggie go along, but not without the rest of her family, too. Even so, Maggie falls under the spell of the son of the same man Fran was in love with many years ago.

13. An Offer She Can't Refuse

When Tony Tortori drops by to pick up his son, the divorced father of Gracie's friend is impressed with Fran. And equally taken with Tony, Fran accepts his invitation to dinner without knowing he's a notorious mob boss. Meanwhile, after Brighton blackmails Maggie with a copy of her diary, C.C. places Maxwell in an awkward position when she fires the star of their next show. Though Fran is taken with Tony's gestures, Maxwell wonders what she sees in someone who sends a side of beef as a gift. And despite attempts to convince her otherwise, she heads off on her date. But it's not until she witnesses a mob hit at the restaurant that Fran realizes just how dangerous Tony can be. Meanwhile, Fran gives Maggie an incriminating videotape that's sure to get Brighton off her back. While Fran sets out to let Tony down gently, Val spills her secret to Niles and it isn't long before Maxwell gets involved. Unaware that Tony is a deadly killer, Maxwell tells him that Fran isn't interested anymore. Fortunately, Tony takes the news in stride, especially after he's made an understudy in Maxwell's next Broadway production.

14. Fashion Show

While hurrying to get ready for a star studded charity premiere, Maxwell insists that Fran's purse looks fine. But when Gloss Magazine uses her picture with the purse to highlight a fashion faux pas, Maxwell lives to regret his haste. And to make her feel better about herself and her fashion sense, he offers to let Fran design the costumes for his scene in a Broadway charity benefit. Although concerned about just what Fran might come up with, Maxwell is reassured when Niles produces photographs of the costumes she is preparing. However, after learning the photos were of Maggie's dry cleaning, he really begins to worry, especially after Fran announces she's hired her cousin Toddy to help. And once the big night finally arrives, he's is certain Fran's designs will make him the laughing stock of Broadway. Following a harsh critique from C.C., Maxwell is convinced that Fran has ruined his career. But when they discover her cousin is actually the well known designer Todd Oldham, C.C. and Maxwell's opinion of Fran's work makes a dramatic reversal. Finally, as C.C. grabs all the credit for the costumes, Fran gets revenge when she spots the Gloss Magazine photographer nearby.

15. Where's Fran?

After catching Maggie smoking a cigarette, Fran thinks she can get her to stop without having to actually tell Maxwell. So she allows herself to get caught, sure that Maxwell's reaction will be enough to scare Maggie. However, when he goes overboard and calls her stupid, the insult prompts Fran to quit. As the rest of the family wonders if she'll ever return, Maxwell is reminded of his tendency to intimidate Fran. And missing her constant interruptions during the day, he turns to Sylvia for help. But after getting nowhere with Fran's mother, in desperation he even calls on C.C. for help. Despite being without any childcare, Maxwell refuses to apologize and insists he can hire another nanny. But it's after an unexpected visit from Yetta that Maxwell overhears Maggie talking and realizes that Fran was simply trying to protect her. At Niles' suggestion, he then heads for the home of neighbor Roger Clinton. And finding Fran negotiating for a new position as nanny to the President's daughter, Maxwell apologizes and keeps her from quitting.

16. The Grandmas

Tired of the Sheffield's predictability, Fran is determined to shake things up. While Maxwell doesn't agree at first, it doesn't take long for Fran to prove he's wrong. Yet, when Gracie asks to go on an unsupervised play date with a friend, Fran isn't so sure she's ready for that much of a change. And it's when she's at home complaining about her boring life that Fran realizes things have gone way too far when she learns her parents have split up. Not wanting to see her parents divorced, Fran calls on her two grandmothers for help. However, she's shocked to find that Yetta and Nettie are quite happy with he way things have worked out. Meanwhile, after agreeing to let Gracie go to a friend's house alone, Fran cannot stop worrying about her. Realizing she's getting nowhere with the grandmas, Fran decides her only recourse is go to Nettie's and speak with her father. But there she's surprised to see her parents have already made up. Though the experience has dampened Fran's desire for change, she returns home to find Maxwell is ready to move on from his stuffy image. Yet, insisting he not change thing, particularly when it comes to his children's freedom, Fran then brings Maxwell back from the brink as she employs a little white lie to get Gracie home, too.

17. Val's Boyfriend

While she's out with Fran, Val is approached by a man who asks for a date. And it isn't long before Pauly's presence deprives Fran of her best friend's company and forces her to turn to the children and Maxwell for companionship. However, not until he and Val drop by unannounced does Fran learn that Pauly also has amorous designs on her. Meanwhile, after Maxwell refuses to make her a partner in his production company, C.C. quits. Overwhelmed by the work that's piling up, Maxwell realizes just how much he depends on C.C. Upon arriving to pick up her things, she produces a tabloid newspaper story announcing her new partnership with composer Marvin Hamlisch. Meanwhile, as Fran is struggling with how to handle Pauly's pass at her, she decides to find a new best friend. But while C.C. seems willing to fill Val's shoes, Fran discovers that all she really wants is someone to help get her back into Maxwell's good graces. As she's laying the groundwork for C.C.'s return, Fran reconsiders after Maxwell asks for her help with some potential investors. However, all plans are put on hold when Val and Pauly arrive. And once Val finds her new boyfriend trying to kiss Fran, Pauly is shown the door and the two best friends are reunited. Finally, with help from Fran, C.C. persuades Maxwell to take her back.

18. Love Is a Many Blundered Thing

As a date for Valentine's Day restores Fran's faith in the romantic holiday, a jaded Maxwell is unaware of C.C.'s plans to seduce him. However, when Fran gets another invitation to meet a secret admirer for a Valentine's Day date, she's sure that it's Maxwell. But only after getting ready does she realize her two dates are about to collide. Having decided that Maxwell is more important, Fran goes about wrapping up her lunch date with Jeff as quickly as possible. However, after she arrives at the ice cream parlor for their rendezvous, Fran finds that it's Brighton's friend Tommy who's really her secret admirer. Realizing her mistake, she's off to undo her own Valentine surprise for Maxwell -- a billboard in Times Square declaring her love for him. Enlisting Val to help, Fran starts to repaint the billboard before Maxwell sees it. But, as they are struggling to erase the giant valentine, Niles tells Maxwell about what's been going on. And touched that his nanny would go to all the trouble for him, Maxwell promptly dumps C.C. and, finding her dangling from the billboard, treats Fran to a Valentine's Day picnic.

19. Your Feets Too Big

As Fran learns of a modeling agency reunion, her mother arrives to announce she's decided to have plastic surgery. Though unconvinced that Sylvia really needs the operation, Fran nonetheless agrees to accompany her to the surgeon's mall office. However, when told that her feet are likely to grow as she ages, Fran is suddenly concerned about how she'll look at the reunion of foot models. And as Fran searches frantically for a pair of shoes that will prove her feet aren't expanding, Gracie suddenly becomes obsessed with staying young, too. Even though Maxwell tries boosting her ego with a few well-timed compliments, Fran just can't accept the fact that her feet have grown a whole size. Following a nightmare about the reunion, Fran dreams she's being seduced by her boss -- until rudely awakened by Sylvia's announcement that she's decided against plastic surgery after all. Meanwhile, Maxwell's vanity is threatened when he's reminded about his own hair loss. Seeing part of her dream come true, Fran is surprised when Maxwell offers to escort her to the reunion. And after some not-so-subtle encouragement from her mom, she accepts the generous invitation. Finally, after everyone at the reunion somehow gets the impression they are husband and wife, Fran and Maxwell return home to continue aging gracefully together.

20. Where's the Pearls?

Despite his clever ruse to get her out of the house, Maxwell is unable to keep Fran from learning that Elizabeth Taylor is dropping by for a meeting. Though promising to steer clear of the actress during her visit, Fran's clever sabotage allows her to be at the door when Ms. Taylor arrives. But Fran is surprised to discover her mother Sylvia is already hiding in the closet. Before her meeting with Maxwell and C.C., Elizabeth asks Fran to call a courier to deliver a priceless black pearl necklace to a photo shoot for her new perfume. Reminded by Sylvia how unsafe a courier would be, Fran decides to deliver them herself. However, as she's trying to console a despondent female cabby, an accident knocks Fran unconscious and sends the pearls flying. As Maxwell is at the hospital fretting over Fran, C.C. arrives with news that the pearls are missing. But her memory loss has made it impossible for Fran to tell him what happened. And Maxwell realizes he has another problem when Fran thinks they are married! Bit by bit Fran's memory begins to return and, after some probing by Sylvia, she finally remembers trying to deliver the pearls. Finally, while Maxwell is upset to learn of the accident, Fran is saved when pearls are been recovered -- or are they???

21. The Hockey Show

After claiming she's given up on men, Fran accepts a date with New York Rangers hockey star Mike LaVoe. Although she's worried about what her boss will think, Maxwell goes all-out to impress Mike with his own macho display. Yet, only on their first date does Fran discover just how superstitious her hockey star date really is. Fran's reaction to Mike's superstitious nature has Maxwell worried about his chances for front row seats at a big game. However, seeing just how much the tickets mean to Maxwell and Brighton, Fran agrees to go to the game, where she's recognized by everyone as Mike's new good luck charm. But, when things turn sour for the Rangers, Fran quickly falls from favor after Mike deems her to be bad luck. Having been dubbed a jinx by the press, Fran suddenly finds herself one of the most hated people in New York. And though she insists Mike must tell the world that she's not a jinx, Maxwell is so taken with the hockey star and his teammates that he can't bring himself to deliver her request. Left to do it on her own, Fran arrives at the Rangers locker room alone. And before their next game, she plays on Mike's superstitions to get him to agree.

As Fran is learning tennis from Brighton, Maxwell is upset by a bad review for his latest play. Forced to reexamine his own life, he concludes that he's done nothing of significance in his 42 years. And when Fran invites him to join her on the tennis court to relieve the tension, losing to the rank beginner further sours his already ugly mood. Though Maxwell needs help coping with his problem, Fran knows he'll never agree to go to therapy on his own. So, with some help from Grace, she tricks him into seeing psychologist Dr. Joyce Brothers. However, more certain than ever that he's a failure, Maxwell storms out of the doctor's office right into the middle of a mid-life crisis. Assured that it will pass, Fran decides not to worry -- until Maxwell tries to reclaim his lost youth. Unsure of what to do next, Fran turns to Sylvia, who immediately blames his loss on the tennis court for sending Maxwell over the edge. So, when Maxwell arrives at her mother's house decked out in a pair of too-tight jeans and driving a new sports car, Fran swings into action to keep the other single women in the neighborhood at bay. Finally, Fran persuades him that he's accomplished much more than he realizes, but still can't keep Maxwell from taking one last impulsive fling.

While Fran prods Gary into asking her for a date, Maxwell joins forces with songwriter Burt Bacharach for a promising new Broadway musical. And, when Burt gets a chance to hear Gary sing, he insists that he be cast in the show. Excited over Gary's prospects as well as her own, Fran invites him for dinner with her parents. When Gary gets everyone's attention primed for an important announcement, both Fran and Sylvia are sure it's a marriage proposal. However, when he reveals that he's giving up the temple to become a Broadway star, Sylvia blames Fran for undermining the temple's newfound success -- especially after an accident leads to Gary being cast as the show's lead. Then, as Maxwell falls victim to his failing hearing, Niles conspires to make C.C.'s temporary stay at the Sheffield's as uncomfortable as possible. After turning to C.C. for advice, Fran decides to let Maggie continue dating in hopes that she'll soon lose interest in John. But when Maxwell still insists that Maggie stop seeing him at once, John's arrival for another date forces Fran to explain. So, after learning of a member of the Fine family whose appearance in a dream is considered a sign of bad luck, Maxwell sets out to sour Fran's show business career. Claming he saw her in a bad dream, Maxwell tells Fran that her late aunt Bubbie Sophie predicted disaster if she continues doing Rosie's show. And though Fran isn't convinced that it means anything at all, she's already been replaced on the show by an elderly couple's restaurant reviews. Finally, C.C. turns down another very lucrative client, only to learn that Fran is no longer a star.

Meanwhile, Fran sees some eerie parallels with Maxwell in Fred's reluctance to make a commitment. After running into him at the yacht club, Fran agrees to help Fred overcome his shyness by teaching him how to dance. However, Fred has a heart attack during their first session. And when Freida walks in and sees him collapsed on top of Fran, she gets the wrong idea and accuses her niece of stealing her man. Although Fran can't convince anyone that it's all a misunderstanding, when he emerges from his coma, Fred explains what happened before proposing to Freida. Once Maxwell agrees to have the wedding at his house, Fred takes Fran aside and declares his love for her. And while Fran is urged to remain silent and let the wedding proceed as planned, she and the guests are surprised when, right after the vows, Fred collapses and leaves his new bride a widow at the altar. Finally, following the funeral, Fran vows to return to the yacht club in her pursuit of a wealthy husband.

However, it's Brighton who distracts the taxman when he discovers Josh audited a famous rock band's return. Then, as Josh's spell over Brighton further widens the divide between father and son, Fran learns that she's facing a $5,000 tax bill while Chester is having his way with Harley. Without the money to pay her taxes, Fran needs Maxwell to help with her appeal. So they arrive to make their case, only to learn that it's already in the hands of an appeals officer. And though he denies her request, the chance to meet Jay Leno when he comes looking for his dog prompts the starstruck appeals officer to settle for a lenient payment plan. And though she never expected it, Fran is surprised when he showers her with lavish and expensive gifts. However, the biggest surprise of all is when Nigel gives her a ticket for the midnight sailing of a luxurious cruise ship and asks that he join him for the trip to be his bride. Faced with the decision on whether to elope or not, Fran struggles to make up her mind as she packs for the trip. And while Fran would have much preferred it had been Maxwell, when Val counsels her not to take Nigel's proposal too lightly, Fran leaves a note for her boss and hurries to make the midnight departure. However, when a series of unfortunate accidents keep her from getting there on time, Fran misses the boat and Nigel. And hurrying home, she intercepts her note before Maxwell can see it .

And though news of the tattoo certainly arouses Maxwell's interest, he still refuses Maggie's request to get one, too. Seeing how turned on Maxwell is by just the thought of her tattoo gives Fran an idea. Even as she promises Sylvia that she'll have it removed, Fran prepares to use the tattoo to woo Maxwell back during a family trip to Bermuda. But, as she looks for any opportunity to wear a revealing bikini that will show it off, obligations to the children get in the way. While putting Grace to bed, Fran decides the time isn't right to alter her relationship with Maxwell. And though a late night swim isn't in order, she does join him for a spirited game of table tennis -- one in which the enormous sexual tension that exists between them nearly explodes. Finally, as Maggie comes to appreciate the serious consequences getting a tattoo will bring, Fran honors her mother's wishes by having hers removed. While giving Fran a driving lesson in his Porsche, Maxwell gets a call from C.C. announcing that Barbra Streisand herself has agreed to host the benefit at her summer home. When the prospect of spending time with her favorite star distracts Fran, she accidentally hits a rabbit with the car. And after C.C. preys on her guilty conscience by reminding her of the tragic accident, despite taking a commanding lead by the final event, Fran falls apart after seeing a lucky rabbit's foot in the contest car. With Fran despondent over letting Maggie down and killing the rabbit, Maxwell offers to take her to Streisand's home. However, when Maxwell suddenly takes ill, Fran must overcome her fear of driving to get them there on time. Finally, after admitting that he feigned illness to help her conquer her fears, Maxwell is surprised when Fran is personally invited back to Streisand's home.

As the storm approaches, Fran recalls the many difficult spots she seems to find herself in when Val is along. And with C.C. confined to a wheelchair, Niles helps Maxwell realize how much he interferes in everyone else's lives. As Niles torments the wheelchair-bound C.C., Sylvia reminds Maxwell that, if he had married Fran, she wouldn't be in the path of a dangerous hurricane. And while Maxwell would prefer not discussing it, he's surprised by a call from Fran. Although she does her best to make it sound like they are having fun, by the time the call is over, both Fran and Maxwell admit they miss one another and she cuts her trip short. Finally, after agreeing never to spend the holidays apart again, Fran gives Maxwell a shock by revealing her own fantasy about their best day together.

And while C.C. does her best to avoid it, she finds herself on the Valentino trial jury with Fran. Meanwhile, when jury service makes it impossible for Fran to work, Niles hires Sylvia to fill in. As the trial gets underway, Fran immediately lets her own interest in Valentino influence her thinking, Yet, while initially inclined to accept the handsome model's story, she has second thoughts after Valentino admits telling the accused housekeeper he loved her and then taking it back. Meanwhile, when the jury is sequestered, C.C. finds she's been put in the same hotel room as Fran. When defendant Anna Hanson is called to the stand, Fran cannot help but offer her own running commentary on her testimony. However, it's C.C. who's repeatedly admonished by the judge for the disruption. Then, as Maxwell and Niles do their best to cope with Sylvia, Fran finds herself the lone holdout on the jury. And even after making her case to each and every juror, she's is unable to convince them to vote for the housekeeper's acquittal. Finally, Maxwell is stunned to learn that, in the wake of the trial, Valentino not only dropped all charges against his housekeeper, but married her, too.

16. The Nose Knows

Insisting that she cannot tell him how to run his life, Maxwell reminds Fran that she's the nanny and not his wife. And when Fran goes to see her therapist about the matter, Dr. Miller encourages her to stop treating Maxwell like he's a husband and more like a boss. Meanwhile, when C.C. is dumped by a younger boyfriend, she pays Niles to escort her to a big awards banquet. While Fran is determined to keep her discussion with the therapist confidential, Maxwell suspects that she's developed a crush on the doctor. However, Fran's lofty opinion of Dr. Miller is challenged when she spots him at a movie with his finger up his nose. When Fran reveals her disillusionment, Maxwell thinks it's because the doctor made untoward sexual advances. And, unaware of the misunderstanding, Fran's refusal to discuss the details of the incident only fuel Maxwell's confusion. When Fran goes to discuss the problem with Dr. Miller, Maxwell follows, offering to give the therapist a piece of his mind, too. Once Fran manages to resolve her problem with Dr. Miller, Maxwell again gets the wrong impression and confronts the therapist. And it's only after Fran reveals the nature of Dr. Miller's transgression that Maxwell discovers the mistake he's made. Finally, after returning home from the banquet, Niles and C.C. find they have much more in common than either of them ever thought.

17. The Bank Robbery

Upon learning of the robbery and hostage situation, Maxwell rushes to the scene with Niles while, inside, Fran and her mother are beginning to get on the robber's nerves. And before Leslie knows it, they are taking orders after he's persuaded him to send out for food while they wait. Then, after Fran delivers his demands to the police, Leslie sees that she's a real asset as Sylvia makes a pitch for her still-unmarried daughter. Meanwhile, as C.C. takes care of Grace, Yetta plans to make a fortune from a knish that looks like Golda Meir. Regretting that their last words were unpleasant, Maxwell resolves to do something to make it up to Fran. And after he publicly proclaims that he doesn't regret saying he loved her, Fran breaks free from Leslie to join him, leaving Sylvia to help with the getaway. Finally, after a quick food stop ends the robbery, Fran accidentally ruins Yetta's chance at making some big money when she eats the unusual knish.

As she and Yetta do their best to avoid being alone with the butler, Fran accuses Maxwell of not spending enough time with his children. And, when the kids all get head lice but their father doesn't, Fran uses it to prove she's right. Meanwhile, as Fran is in the drug store to buy some lice shampoo, she spots Niles picking up what she's sure are the weapons for his next crime. Unable to convince C.C. of his murderous tendencies, Fran continues to avoid spending time alone with Niles. After dreaming that her suspicions cost her chance to marry Maxwell, Fran nervously sneaks around the house to avoid being seen. However, her efforts to get Maxwell to spend more time with the children come back to haunt her when he takes the kids out for dinner and leaves her home alone with Niles. Failing to convince Niles that she needs to visit her mother, Fran resigns herself to whatever fate will bring. However, after trying to protect herself from what she thinks is a deadly attack, Fran learns that what she found in the butler's pocket was just part of a play he's been working on. And upon finally getting lice, too, Maxwell is forced to bring the kids home early from their evening out together.

While struggling to help her mother with a new diet, Fran is contacted by a woman claiming to be her real mother. Though she doesn't want to believe it, Fran is willing to consider that she was accidentally switched at birth, especially after learning that Mrs. Baker lives in one of Manhattan's wealthiest neighborhoods. Recalling her childhood, she then looks for clues that might confirm that Sylvia isn't really her mom. Meanwhile, C.C. arranges for one of Maxwell's plays to be sold to television. After pressing her for details about the day she was born, Fran tells Sylvia that she may not really be her daughter. Deciding to find out for sure, Fran has high hopes for being a member of a wealthy family. But what she didn't expect was that Mrs. Baker would be black. Once the shock of seeing her wears off, Fran resumes her quest to find out who her real mother is. Meanwhile, when the play is turned down, C.C. suggests a switched-at-birth story that's remarkably similar to Fran's. As Sylvia insists that the claim cannot be true, Fran heads for a dinner at the Baker's where a DNA test will settle things once and for all. While Fran is growing accustomed to the new surroundings, Sylvia arrives to complain. However, as Sylvia also starts to appreciate the possibilities of Fran living at the Baker mansion, the test shows that she is not Mrs. Baker's daughter. And while Sylvia insists it must be a mistake, Fran returns to her life with the Sheffields.

Following his Tony Award-winning season, Maxwell lands actress Morgan Faulkner for his next play. Revealing that the former Marcy Feldman was her classmate and closest rival in high school, Fran does her best to stay out of sight during Morgan's visit. However, unable to resist, she swoops in on Marcy and lets it slip that she is the Sheffield children's nanny. Meanwhile, as the Sheffields prepare to spend Passover with the Fines, Maggie worries about getting into Princeton. Taking her mother's advice, Fran decides not to worry about Morgan's rise to success. However, once they are alone, Fran accuses her of flouting her wealth and fame. Then, as Maggie hears bad news from Princeton and every other college she applied to, Morgan invites her to a star-studded party. And while the invitation has hurt Fran's feelings, she's most upset when Morgan offers Maggie a job as her assistant. When Morgan wants to take Maggie to Europe for the summer, Maxwell sets out to stop it. But C.C. warns that he could be jeopardizing Morgan's participation in their play, so Maxwell agrees to let Fran speak for him. However, when the visit revives their old rivalry, Morgan refuses to make it easy for Maggie to leave. Yet, at the Fine family seder, Maggie arrives late to announce that she's decided to try and attend college after all, particularly because Morgan is a cheapskate.

After composing a song a lot like those being sung by rock superstar Tasha, Fran is determined to meet her. And while Maxwell and C.C. each suggest she stick with what she knows how to do, Fran decides to become an alternative rock songwriter. But once she and Val arrive at a rehearsal for Tasha's concert, they are surprised to find how hard it is to get close to her. Disguising themselves as maids, Fran and Val gain access to Tasha's hotel room. When Fran admits she has a song for her to see, they are quickly shown the door by her manager, Elaine. But when they run into Tasha after she sneaks away for some time on her own, Fran gets the opportunity she was after in spite of Elaine's attempt to break things up again. Although Tasha decides that her song lacks the struggle of common people that she's after, she starts spending time with Fran. And while Maxwell decides to do what he can to keep her from being disappointed again, his efforts run the risk of backfiring when they suggest that he wants to rekindle their romance. As a result, Fran loses the anger that made her songs compelling and Tasha decides to part ways with her after all.

23. You Bette Your Life

When Fran learns that Bette Midler will be at a charity auction organized by Maxwell and C.C., she volunteers her services to be put up for bid. Hoping to secure funding for his next project, Maxwell also invites wealthy philanthropist Tom Rosenstein who, upon meeting Fran, bids on her despite Maxwell's subtle efforts to the contrary. After being introduced to Fran, Bette gets involved in the auction herself once Tom promises to restore a theater and name it after her. As a result, Fran fetches $5,000 from Tom for a day with his fourteen-year-old son, Keith. Arriving for his day with Fran, Tom points out Keith is an aspiring concert pianist. However, when Fran takes him to play at her grandmother's nursing home, another elderly resident's untimely death traumatizes Keith and he stops playing for good. Even though he's agreed to invest in Maxwell's new play, word that his son had a dead body pin him to the piano keyboard causes Tom to call off the deal with Maxwell and back out on the his agreement to restore the theater for Bette. After discussing the problem with her mom and Val, Fran concludes that Keith is only pretending in order to escape the pressure coming from his father. However, when Bette learns that the deal for the theater is off, she looks to Fran for an explanation. Given a chance to remedy the situation, Fran then takes Bette along, too. And when Keith can't resist a chance to be her accompanist, he admits to using the accident to avoid his father's constant pressure. But in exchange for a date with Maggie, he agrees to resume playing and patch things between his dad and Maxwell.

24. Fran's Gotta Have It

After getting a kiss upon his departure for a business trip to London, Fran is convinced that, while he hasn't actually said so, Maxwell wants her to come along, too. So, while Maxwell enjoys the comfort of his first class accommodations, Fran struggles to follow in coach. Upon his arrival at his London hotel. Maxwell is surprised to find Fran waiting for him. And though Maxwell first suggests she leave, it doesn't take long for their passion to bloom. But just as they are getting ready to at long last consummate their relationship, a fire alarm sends them running from their hotel room. As they are discussing the possibility of moving to another hotel to continue their tryst, Fran and Maxwell are surprised by the arrival of his brother, Nigel. And while Maxwell is anxious to get back to their room as quickly as possible, Fran cannot resist an invitation to attend a concert by singing sensation Celine Dion. However, as Fran and Maxwell are hurrying to leave the concert for the hotel as soon as possible, news that Niles has had a heart attack sends them hurrying home at once. In New York, Fran and Maxwell rush to the hospital where C.C. is holding a tortured vigil for Niles. Blaming herself for the butler's condition, she tries to make amends, beginning with an apology to Maxwell and Fran. But, as they are lamenting the bad timing of the heart attack, Fran and Maxwell decide to complete what they started in London right there in Niles' hospital room.

25. The Boca Story

As she's lamenting the shaky status of her relationship with Maxwell, Fran learns that her mother has been solicited about buying a condo in Florida. While initially dubious, after realizing the benefits of having her far away, Fran decides to accompany Sylvia to hear the sales pitch. However, after convincing her mother to move as soon as possible, the mere thought of it suddenly depresses Fran. At Maxwell's urging, Fran agrees to consult her therapist, who diagnoses her problem as separation anxiety. While Dr. Miller encourages Fran to give the idea some time before overreacting, to help her realize that it's all for the better, Maxwell invites her to come along with him and the family to Florida to see her mother's new home. And though she's reluctant to go, word that he's judging the Miss Universe contest quickly changes Fran's mind. After jealousy prompts her to get Maxwell dismissed as a contest judge, Fran balks at the suggestion that she drop by her mother's new place. However, after being made aware of just how much it will do for her relationship with Maxwell, Fran actually begins to anxiously look forward to the move. But when Fran discovers that the real estate deal was a scam, she must face the fact that Sylvia won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

After a day at Heather's beach house, Fran and Val head for the studio where she's taping her show. While there, they find that Heather's co-stars cannot stand her. And when Heather is forced to admit that she's in over her head, an effort to help her out gets Fran hired in the role instead. Meanwhile, when news of Fran's new acting career reaches New York, C.C. couldn't be happier. But when Maxwell worries about finding someone to replace Fran, Niles hatches a plan. After taking over her beach house and job, Fran is surprised when Maxwell offers her old job to the unemployed Heather. Yet, it doesn't take long for Maxwell to realize what a mistake he's made. Meanwhile, unable to stand the thought of being replaced by Heather, Fran quits her new job and heads for home. Finally, after running into each other at the airport, Fran and Maxwell realize what they have between them and slip away for a brief vacation before firing Heather.

However, when Maxwell tries to distract her by asking her to redecorate the kitchen, Fran must redouble her efforts to keep him interested. Told of the redecorating project, Sylvia encourages Fran to use it to keep Maxwell's interest. And when her mother suggests getting help, Fran calls on her cousin and interior decorator, Sheila. However, Sheila's efforts to make the kitchen more seductive backfire when they remind her of how she was recently dumped by her own boyfriend. Meanwhile, Niles' recuperation takes it's toll on the Sheffield family. Already uncomfortable with the parallels between Sheila's ill-fated romance and her own, Fran is made even more so upon hearing that Yetta is engaged to be married. And while Fran struggles to find a way to jump start Maxwell's interest, the new kitchen decor works its magic on Niles and C.C. Then, after learning that Sheila has not only reunited with her ex-boyfriend but gotten engaged, too, Fran realizes that she has to redo the kitchen as soon as possible. But it's when Maxwell finally grows tired of waiting on Niles that Fran rekindles his interest by stepping in to help out.

But nothing can top Fran's surprise and delight when she learns that Maxwell is taking her and her alone as his date to a private dinner reception with Elton John. Giddy with her excitement over her first real date with Maxwell, Fran she recalls her own brief encounter with singer Elton John during a trip to the French Riviera. But when a clip in the movie recounts her disturbing the singer's tennis game in France, Fran sees her wonderful evening coming to a ruinous end. Meanwhile, as C.C. struggles to understand why Maxwell didn't ask her, Niles plays a practical joke by convincing her that Mr. Sheffield has a fourth child. Hoping to disguise herself so that the singer doesn't recognize her, Fran talks Yetta out of her wig and glasses. Although the disguise fools Elton, it disturbs Maxwell. However, just as Fran and Maxwell think she may have gotten away with the ruse, a familiar good-bye wave exposes her as the woman who ruined Elton's tennis game. Finally, as Niles relishes having fooled C.C., Maxwell surprises Fran by not letting the evening's escapade set their new relationship back.

3. The Bobbi Fleckman Story

As he's driving his father insane with his new electric guitar, Brighton wins a contest that puts the Sheffield house in the Brian Setzer Orchestra's new music video. Although Maxwell is depending on her to keep Brighton's guitar playing from interfering with his schoolwork, Fran is excited about the prospect of meeting bandleader Brian Setzer. And as Maggie tries coping with pressure to join a sorority, Brighton gets ready for the band and their record company's vice president, Bobby Flekman. When Bobbie arrives with her assistant Clotilde, she quickly blows by Fran before landing in the library with C.C. Upon learning who Brighton's father is, Bobbie admits she's been trying to get in touch with him. And once Maxwell finds they have a lot to talk about, C.C. warns Fran that Bobbie is after their man. Although Fran agrees to show some class in her efforts to woo her boss, she has a change of heart after seeing Maxwell kissing Bobbie. In an effort to get Maxwell's attention, Fran makes a pass at Brian Setzer. Yet, he's oblivious to her shameless flirting. And even when she tries convincing him that Brighton's schoolwork is suffering, Maxwell won't listen. But once Sylvia steps in to help, Maxwell claims to have only a business interest in Bobbie and that she's a lesbian. And though she's unhappy with being "outed," with some encouragement from Fran, Bobbie finally admits to being in love with Clotilde as she nixes a business deal with Maxwell.

4. A Decent Proposal

When C.C. proposes a one-man show starring Chevy Chase, Maxwell suggests taking everyone to Atlantic City to see the comic's act. Although C.C. insists that Fran not be invited, Maxwell cannot resist asking her go and meet Chevy Chase after the nanny claims to have a hot date. And upon arriving in Atlantic City, Fran immediately tries finding something for the children to do so she and Maxwell can spend some time together. Meanwhile, Brighton schemes to get into a strip show, as Niles confronts his own gambling addiction. After they've seen his show, Chevy Chase suspects that C.C. is bringing him bad luck at the gaming tables. As a result, he latches on to Fran, who gets him winning again. As a result, Maxwell is more than a little concerned when the comic decides to spend the evening with Fran. Meanwhile, when Niles' luck takes a serious turn for the worse, Fran must keep him from gambling again. And even though he catches her sneaking out of the butler's room after she's stolen Niles' wallet, all Maxwell can think about is Fran's date with the comedian. Unable to be completely honest with Fran about how he feels, Maxwell seeks Niles' advice. And wanting his wallet back as soon as possible, Niles charges into Fran's room, all the while making sure she understands just how jealous her date with Chevy has made Maxwell. Convinced that Fran gave his wallet to her, Niles comes looking for it and gives C.C. totally the wrong idea about his intentions. Then, as he's counseling Niles about his gambling problem, Maxwell tries to listen in on Fran and Chase. And after bursting into the room only to find them playing cards, Maxwell must finally admit to his feelings for Fran.

5. Fransom

With the approach of Yetta's wedding shower, Fran needs money for a present. So when C.C. offers her more money than Maxwell does just to walk her dog, Fran is more than happy to accept. But when she's flattered by a handsome dog-walker, Fran lets Chester off his leash to play. And when she goes to find him, both Chester and Brian are nowhere to be found. Trying to keep the dog's disappearance a secret, Fran turns to a police officer she once dated. But C.C. doesn't seem to be at all fazed by Chester's disappearance, even after Jeff suggests it's the work of a dog-napper who's been preying on the neighborhood pets. When Brian calls demanding a ransom, C.C. threatens him with trouble unless she gets Chester back at once. So Fran and Val team up to collect the $20,000 she has offered for the dog's safe return. After an ice cream truck heard during the phone call helps them locate Chester, Fran and Val are able to follow Brian home. However, when their efforts are thwarted and they are taken hostage, too, Brian calls Maxwell to demand another $20,000 for their return. Responding to Brian's demands, Maxwell gets together the money to free Fran, Val and Chester. After carefully following Brian's instructions, Maxwell refuses to release the cash until he knows Fran is safe. However, after tricking Brian and his jealous girlfriend into eating a laxative she claims is chocolate, Fran escapes with Val and Chester in tow.

6. The Ex-Niles

After he reprimands Niles for snooping, Fran and C.C. square off over which one of them would make Maxwell the best wife. To settle their disagreement, Fran suggests letting psychologist Dr. Joyce Brothers decide. After Dr. Brothers insists on coming to the house for an in-person interview, Fran decides to refurnish her room in order to make a good impression. However, when a look at her credit application for the furniture leads Niles to believe that Fran makes much more money than he does, he asks Maxwell for a raise. And when Maxwell refuses, Niles quits. Although Fran begs him to reconsider, she's less inclined to plead Niles's case after learning she will choose their new butler. However, as Fran finds Niles a new job with her wealthy Aunt Freida, it's C.C. who hires an officious new butler for the Sheffield household. Finding herself and the kids unable to cope with Trevor's stuffiness, Fran is determined to bring Niles back. But she's surprised to find that he's become her aunt's lover as well as her servant. And even after learning that Fran's lie on her credit application caused the misunderstanding, Niles won't take his old job back. As they are waiting for Dr. Brothers, Fran realizes her case for Maxwell is a weak one. But just as Dr. Brothers arrives to render her opinion, Niles shows up, too, unwilling to fulfill Freida's erotic desires any longer and determined to be rehired. Meanwhile, when Maxwell grows weary of Trevor's unrelenting perfectionism, he also wishes for Niles to return. So, after Dr. Brothers concludes that he get rid of both Fran and C.C., Maxwell rehires Niles after getting him to promise not to snoop again.

7. Mommy and Mai

After misplacing it for three weeks, Sylvia finds the letter Fran received from the Cambodian orphan she and Val adopted while in school. News that Mai-Ling is arriving in New York the next day forces Fran to act fast. Over Val's protests, she asks Maxwell if the nineteen-year-old Cambodian girl can stay at his house. And once Mai-Ling arrives, it doesn't take long for Fran and Val to begin arguing over her. Following Niles's advice, Val buys Mai-Ling some new clothes. However, when Val sees her in one of Fran's provocative new outfits, it again sets the two mothers to arguing. As a result of their disagreement, Fran and Val turn to Dr. Miller. But, unwilling to give any of the therapist's suggestions a try, they decide to break up as Fran declares she intends to sue for custody. When Fran seeks her advice, Sylvia warns her against breaking off with Val over Mai-Ling, who she suspects is after Maxwell. Although Maxwell denies having any interest in Mai-Ling, it turns out that it's Brighton she's after. And while Brighton has agreed to marry her so she can immigrate, Maxwell and Fran will hear nothing of it. Finally, after sending Mai-Ling on her way, Fran makes up with Val, only to learn that their adopted daughter has taken up with the son of Barbra Streisand.

8. Fair Weather Fran

While Fran is upset that she isn't the one getting married, Yetta's black fiancee causes Sylvia to question her mother's desire to marry. Turning to her therapist, Dr. Miller, for help, Fran decides to assert her independence by pursuing her lifelong ambition of being a TV weather girl. And determined to achieve her dream, Fran sees just how she's going to do it after learning that Yetta's fiancee, Sam, is TV newsman Bryant Gumbel's uncle. Even though he's positive that she has absolutely no chance of being hired, just to be sure Maxwell decides to use Gracie to convince Fran that she's needed at home. But when Fran arrives at the studio, Bryant Gumbel asks her to audition for an editorial commentator's spot instead. Meanwhile, as Sylvia tries to find a way to keep from being seen as prejudiced, Niles bets that C.C. cannot keep from snooping on Maxwell for one whole week. As Niles enlists Brighton in a scheme to make sure that C.C. loses, Maxwell learns that Fran has been asked to audition for a commentator's job. Realizing she's afraid, he does his best to boost Fran's confidence while trying to keep Gracie from following through on their plan to undermine the audition. However, when Fran gets the wrong idea when asked about gene therapy, she embarrasses herself and upsets Bryant. And after he's blamed for encouraging her in the first place, Maxwell uses Grace to persuade Fran to stay at home with the kids after all. Finally, C.C. gets an eyeful when, spying on her boss, she sees Maxwell and Fran in a passionate kiss.

9. Educating Fran

When Maggie becomes infatuated with her philosophy professor, Maxwell orders Fran to make sure that the teacher isn't trying to start an affair. Taking Yetta along, Fran arrives at the Professor Steve Goldberg's classroom to find that Maggie isn't the only student with a crush on the teacher. And when Steve learns of their shared interest in astrology and offers to do her chart, Fran can't keep from lying about her age. Meanwhile, word that Steve doesn't even know who she is has Maggie upset. After telling Maxwell that she and Steve are dating, Fran must break the news to a despondent Maggie. After begging Maggie not to be upset, Fran then arrives at Steve's apartment to find that his mother has also dropped by. Following Mrs. Goldberg's severe rebuke, Steve and Fran find themselves alone together. Only Fran's fun is diminished by Steve's dog, which looks a lot like Maxwell. Despite Maxwell's cynicism, Fran is sure that she and Steve are right for each other. But lying about her age suddenly catches up with her when Steve's psychic says he should be involved with an older woman. And when Steve takes the advice to heart, Fran is stunned to learn that he's now dating C.C.

10. From Flushing with Love

On news of her upcoming family reunion at Niagara Falls, Fran asks Maxwell for the weekend off. However, when Niles is invited to a butler's choir competition in Bermuda, Maxwell absentmindedly forgets his agreement with Fran and gives him the weekend off, too. With no one to care for the children, Maxwell must then choose which of his loyal employees to disappoint. And when Fran seductively persuades their boss to side with her, Niles teams with C.C. in order to get revenge. In the wake of Niles and C.C.'s unrelenting harassment, Fran turns to her therapist, who sends her home to salvage her friendship with the butler. At Niles suggestion, Fran decides to take Maxwell and the kids to Niagara Falls, the honeymoon capital of the world, hoping he'll be inspired to propose. As Sylvia delights in the prospect of having the family reunion double as her daughter's wedding, Fran pressures Maxwell to come along. While everyone else seems to be in on her plan, Maxwell doesn't realize that Fran has a wedding in store. And during a sightseeing boat tour of the falls, she must keep her family from tipping him off before he's had a chance to be inspired by the romantic setting. However, when an unsuspecting uncle reveals her secret, Maxwell turns to question Fran. But when he's mesmerized by the beauty of the falls and is inspired to propose, the noise of the falls makes it impossible for Fran to hear.

11. One False Mole and You're Dead

Before meeting to discuss their new project with actress Stephanie Mann, Maxwell and C.C. make sure Fran is occupied elsewhere. Yet, aware of the movie star's presence at the Sheffield mansion, Fran disguises herself as the gardener in order to get a look. And when she accidentally hoses down Stephanie, Fran's efforts to help clean her up reveal that the actress's famous trademark mole is a fake. Despite her promise to Maxwell to keep Stephanie's secret, Fran can't help but tell while at the doctor's office with her mother. But what she doesn't realize is that gossip columnist Cindy Adams has also overheard the news. When Cindy reveals the secret of the mole on TV, Maxwell and C.C.'s chances at keeping Stephanie in their new musical are jeopardized. Taking Yetta's advice, Fran sets out to solve the problem by apologizing to Stephanie and asking her to reconsider backing out of the show. Insisting that the news doesn't have to mean the end of her career, Fran even suggests going into business together marketing the fake beauty mark to women everywhere. However, after swearing Stephanie to secrecy in order to protect the project, Fran is stunned when a cosmetics company quickly steals the idea. With Fran depressed over her idea being stolen, Maxwell is sure that it was his loose talk in a health club steam room that let the secret out. To make it up to her, he decides he has no other alternative that to ask Fran to marry him. However, upon learning that Stephanie struck a deal of her own with a cosmetics company to market her mole, Fran won't accept Maxwell's proposing simply out of guilt. And while Maxwell gets out of having to marry the nanny, he isn't sure that he really wants to.

12. Call Me Fran

Wanting to do something special for her father's birthday, Fran has Maxwell get her some V.I.P tickets to a big hockey game. However, when Sylvia shows up instead, Fran learns that her father didn't come because he disapproves of how she's being treated by Maxwell. On Grace's advice, Fran turns to her therapist, barging into the middle of his acupuncture appointment. While she demands to know why she's being rejected by her dad, Dr. Miller sees some parallels between her relationship with her father and the one she has with Maxwell. As a result of her therapy session, Fran decides to call Maxwell's attention to his impersonal treatment of her. And after doing her best to keep the truth from the singer's friend, the handsome Dr. Mark Lipschitz, she secretly finds relief in a nearby fountain. However, when she arrives for her appointment with her mom's doctor the following day, Fran is stunned to discover Mark is filling in. Mark's arrival to see her at home forces Fran to reveal the nature of her embarrassing illness to Maxwell. Once the secret is out, Fran again turns to Sylvia, this time for advice on how to handle Maggie's using birth control. But their opportunity to make love at long last is disrupted when an insect bite paralyzes Maxwell. Back in New York, news of their accident causes Sylvia to conclude that Fran is dead. While C.C. prepares to use the tragedy for the publicity it's sure to bring, a nightmare reminds her that she's the one who wished the newlyweds bad luck. But, as everyone assures C.C. that the accident wasn't really her fault, news arrives that the search for Maxwell and Fran has officially been called off. Meanwhile, after she saves his life, Fran and Maxwell declare their undying love for one another. Unwilling to allow the search to stop without one final effort, C.C. and Sylvia use a helicopter to comb the area where they were lost. Having arranged for Niles and the kids to be elsewhere, Fran is surprised when C.C. arrives to join Maxwell at a dinner to court a wealthy investor. Although Maxwell assures her that, as his wife, she can come along too, he insists that Fran be on her best behavior as he courts Sir Wendell Joffrey to finance his next play. Once it's clear that Sir Wendell is ready to invest, Maxwell takes Fran into the bathroom to share the good news. When he asks to be alone so he can use the facilities, Fran balks. As Maxwell insists that some things must remain private, he and Fran are stuck in the bathroom when the door handle suddenly breaks. While hoping to keep the embarrassing accident a secret, Maxwell sends Fran outside on the ledge while he uses the toilet. However, when Fran slips and falls, her life is spared when she lands on top of Sir Wendell, instantly killing him and Maxwell's chances at getting any of his money.

3. Once a Secretary, Always a Secretary

When Maxwell stands his ground, it doesn't take Fran long to realize that he still thinks of her as his children's nanny. However, once Sylvia learns the truth, she suggests Fran hold out on having sex in order to get Maxwell to do what she wants. After failing to fall into Fran's sexual trap, Maxwell leaves for an appearance on "Entertainment Tonight." However, Fran is stunned when Maxwell refers to her as his nanny on national television. Although Maxwell tries making up for the gaffe with an expensive gift, Fran realizes that he'll never stop seeing her as the nanny until she has been replaced. After hiring the super-efficient Nanny Bowers, Fran sets out to remake her own image at her husband's exclusive country club. But, while Fran sees that she doesn't fit in with the country club set, Maxwell realizes just how much he's depended on her at home. After letting Nanny Bowers go, Fran sides with Maxwell as Brighton continues to press them about the trip. And even though she needs someone to watch the children so she and Niles can have a day off, Fran wisely refuses to hire the beautiful young woman the agency sent.

As Fran is doing her best to impress the Huntleys, Sylvia arrives unexpectedly. Hoping to avoid a disaster, Maxwell quickly sends them off to a museum with the kids. Returning to the mansion to learn that C.C. is courting them too, Fran tries to make a good impression by taking the Huntleys to a karaoke bar. However, when Fran uses the occasion to announce that she's adopting the children, Roberta insists she'll contest it. And, though Maxwell insists they'll prevail, C.C. warns Fran that Roberta and Ernest will dig up every unsavory detail about her past in order to stop the adoption. When Sylvia deems her problem a serious one, Fran learns that Roberta and Ernest could get custody of Brighton and Grace if something were to happen to their dad. Confessing her past indiscretions to Maxwell, she's surprised to discover that he had her investigated years ago when she first came to work as their nanny. Finally, after convincing the Huntleys that they will always be a part of the family and that Sara's memory will never die, Roberta and Ernest reconsider their opposition.

Meanwhile, Niles is depressed by the fact that Maggie's boyfriend makes more money than he does. Though his refusal to consider her opinion of Michael sets them to arguing, Fran gets Maxwell to agree to allow their daughter to make up her own mind about a boyfriend. But Fran sees trouble ahead when Maggie announces that she's moving in with him. While Fran does her best to keep the news from Maxwell, C.C. makes sure that he knows Maggie and Michael are living together. And when she's blamed for it all, Fran seeks her mother's advice. Following Sylvia's example, Fran sets out to use some good old fashioned guilt to convince Maggie to move back home. Arriving at Michael's apartment, she begins by faking a heart attack in hopes it will get Maggie to reconsider. When that doesn't work, Maxwell shows up blames Fran for the mess. And, seeing how her decision is coming between her parents, Maggie decides to move back home, unaware that the argument was staged in an effort to get her to change her mind.

6. I'm Pregnant

Still upset over having caught Maggie and Michael together, Maxell insists that Fran have a talk with their daughter. However, as Fran is trying to convince her to heed her father's warning, Maggie announces that she might be pregnant. And though Fran tries to privately give Maggie a home pregnancy test, they cannot keep Maxwell from learning the truth. Meanwhile, when Niles has second thoughts about buying the car, C.C. refuses to give his money back. On Maxwell's orders, Fran goes with Maggie to see Dr. Reynolds for a definitive test. But while Maggie is overjoyed to learn she isn't really pregnant, Fran is shocked to discover that she is! Meanwhile, C.C. offers to buy the car back in order to sell it for more to a collector, unaware that it's a clever trap set by Niles. However, when Yetta returns home from the theater without Brighton and asks C.C. not to tell Maxwell, a misunderstanding leads Niles to think she knows about Fran being pregnant. As Fran tries creating a romantic moment to tell him the news, Maxwell cannot keep his mind off the lunch she's prepared to help soften him up. Once the talk turns to having a baby, Maxwell continues to insist that now isn't the time for them to have any more children. But an overly emotional Fran cannot keep her secret any longer and storms off after telling Maxwell that she's pregnant. Meanwhile, when Brighton returns home from the movies alone, he asks Grace not to tell anyone that he's lost Yetta. Upon realizing that Maxwell knows, Niles insists that he apologize to Fran. Having headed for the park to think, Fran meets a young mother who encourages her to work things out with Maxwell. But when Fran suddenly takes ill and is rushed to the hospital, everyone worries that it's because of the baby. As the family arrives to find out what's happened, Maxwell and Fran fear the worst as they anxiously await news from their doctor.

Questioning Max's potency, Sylvia recommends that Fran see a Chinese doctor to help them conceive. And while Val also gets some pills that make her smarter, some aphrodisiac cookies prescribed for Fran and Maxwell work magic on Niles and C.C. Upon returning from the doctor, Fran immediately goes to work on getting Maxwell to drink an herbal milkshake. And as things are heating up between them, as well as with Niles and C.C., Maxwell learns he has been chosen for a guest appearance on "Hollywood Squares." But when the pregnancy tests continue to come back negative, Fran starts taking hormone supplements. After learning they must wait until she's ovulating before trying again, Fran and Maxwell are forced to do something other than have sex. As a result, she begins to wonder if they have anything in common other than their lust for each other. As Niles and C.C. are falling in love, Maxwell makes his "Hollywood Squares" debut. But when Fran begins ovulating during the show and sneaks onto the set to find him, she and Maxwell hurry off to a dressing room to seize the moment. Finally, the attraction between Niles and C.C. wears off with the last of the cookies.

9. O Say, Can You Ski?

However, wanting to use meeting the President to secure a chance to produce at the Kennedy Center, Maxwell is intent on keeping Fran from doing anything embarrassing. But it's Fran who ends up impressing President and Mrs. Clinton. And when she's the one who gets a personal invitation to join them on the slopes, it's up to her husband to see that she learns to ski. After a run in with her instructor, Fran is convinced she'll never learn to ski. Taking matters into his own hands, Maxwell then sets out to teach her himself. After an accident strands the two of them inside a cave waiting to be rescued, not only does Fran not know how to ski, but she has a cold, too. But just as she's about to join the President and the First Lady on the slopes, a pharmacist's phone call about some antibiotics reveals that she's actually pregnant. Finally, after breaking the good news to Maxwell, Fran and the family return home for Thanksgiving to celebrate.

Seeking revenge for not being invited to the wedding, Fran's wealthy Aunt Freida buys the building where Sylvia and Morty are living in order to evict them. Left with nowhere else to go, the Fines arrive on their daughter's doorstep, forcing Fran to break the news to Maxwell. And despite not having been asked first, Maxwell reluctantly allows his new in-laws to move into the mansion until they find something else. Meanwhile, Maggie conspires to get her boyfriend hired to model for her dad and C.C. Although Fran grows tired of Sylvia's constant criticism, Maxwell quickly learns to appreciate her attention to his needs. And once Fran sees just how close Maxwell and Sylvia have become, she resolves to outdo her mom in her attentiveness to her husband. So, as Niles tries to get himself hired for the modeling job, Fran goes to work on wooing Maxwell away from his mother-in-law. Though Maxwell insists that Fran doesn't need to try so hard to win his affection, he soon realizes just what a pain hosting Sylvia and Morty has become. To see that her parents move back into their old apartment, Fran doctors the wedding videos to include Freida. And once Sylvia and her sister are able to view the tape together, they grudgingly make up. Finally, after Sylvia and Morty are gone, Maxwell admits he conspired to get Fran to be the one to get them to move out.

11. The Hanukkah Story

Though Fran looks forward to their first Hanukkah as a family, Maxwell is going out of town on business. To make matters worse, he's taking Grace along. And, as Maxwell's sister arrives unexpectedly for a holiday visit with her new boyfriend, Niles is disappointed to discover that C.C. will also be joining Max and Grace on their trip. Meanwhile, as Fran recalls childhood Hanukkah experiences with her family, Max remembers being abandoned by his own father during the holidays. En route to Boston, both C.C. and Maxwell realize just how much they are going to miss spending the holidays with Niles and Fran. As a result, Max uses his cell phone to call home and announce that they are coming back. But when a car accident leaves them stranded, Fran assumes the worst. Meanwhile, Jocelyn's trip is ruined after she discovers that her boyfriend is married. As Fran and the rest of the family alert the police to their plight, Maxwell waits patiently to be rescued along with his daughter and his business partner. Finding Fran alone on the front porch, a passing nun offers to pray for Maxwell and the others. And once word arrives the car has been found with everyone safe and sound, Fran is certain that it helped provide a much-needed Hanukkah miracle.

12. The Fran in the Mirror

As Fran prepares for Grace's interview for admission to the Eastside School for the Gifted, Maxwell excitedly awaits the arrival of his old college chum, Rodney Pembrook. While Fran is doing her best to impress the school's headmistress, Maxwell and Rodney arrive home drunk. And despite Fran's efforts to intervene, she cannot keep from being embarrassed by their bawdy conduct. Meanwhile, upon learning that he's inherited a royal title, Niles prepares to quit work and enjoy his newfound fortune. Before leaving on a business trip, Maxwell tells Fran about a new investment that Rodney says could make them both lots of money. When Maxwell leaves for London without giving him a check, Rodney asks Fran for the one million dollars he says her husband was prepared to invest. Over C.C.'s objections, she gives him the money, only to learn that Rodney is a penniless con man looking for another mark. And once Rodney has cashed the check and wired the funds to a Swiss bank, C.C. is sure that this is the mistake that will cost Fran her marriage. Meanwhile, in hopes of getting Grace into the prestigious private school, Fran lies about her family background. As C.C. prepares to step into the breach, Fran sets out to convince Rodney to return the money. Upon hearing his sad story, she refuses to be reimbursed and, after confronting her own conscience, decides to tell Max the truth. However, after they go to see Rodney, Fran and Maxwell learn that his investment has netted them a half-million dollar profit. Convinced that honesty is the best course to take, Fran then tells Mrs. Davis the truth, only to learn that Grace has been denied admission in favor of an underprivileged applicant. Finally, Niles is forced to return to work for the Sheffields and take a part-time job after learning that his inheritance is less than worthless.

13. The Yummy Mummy

As the due date for their baby approaches, Fran and Maxwell worry about everything from whether to stop having sex, to the many unpleasant side effects of her pregnancy. However, Fran is especially concerned when Maxwell doesn't want to know if their new baby is a boy or a girl. To help take her mind off it all, Val suggests joining Brighton on his tour of prospective colleges. And when Maxwell is just a little too agreeable, Fran learns that it's because she'll be away when actress Lynn Redgrave visits the house. Meanwhile, C.C. finds a date whose insults she enjoys even more than Niles'. During their visit to Harvard, Brighton is upset by some student's salacious comments about Fran. As a result, he asks that she not join him on anymore campus visits. Unaware of just why he is so upset, Fran assumes that it's because Brighton is embarrassed by her lack of education. So, when Redgrave drops by again, Fran seeks her advice. Meanwhile, jealousy over C.C.'s new boyfriend begins to effect Niles at work. After Maxwell walks in on her lessons from Redgrave, Fran cannot keep her concerns a secret any longer. With Maxwell claiming she has nothing to worry about, Fran confronts Brighton and is happy to learn that the college students found her attractive, not stupid. Finally, after she breaks up with Colin, Niles is happy to take C.C. back. And when Fran and Maxwell agree to take a look their new baby with a sonogram, they discover that they're having twins.

14. California, Here We Come?

When Maxwell is asked to produce a television series in Los Angeles, Fran is certain that her mother will be upset over their moving away. Yet, while Niles isn't excited about the idea, Sylvia couldn't care less and encourages Fran to follow her husband to California. In Los Angeles, Fran quickly sets about looking for a house, ending up at the mansion owned by The Beverly Hillbillies co-star, Donna Douglas. And when Fran explains how her mother has encouraged the move, Donna suggests that Sylvia is just covering up her hurt feelings. Meanwhile, one look at the mansion's features ease Niles's reluctance. Even though studio executive Maury Sherry suggests some changes in his show, Maxwell still wants a deal. However, when she arrives at the studio, Fran argues against it because of how much it will upset her mother. And even though Maxwell agrees when Sherry suggests bringing her to California with them, Sylvia balks, causing Fran to wonder why. Following a disagreement over the move, Sylvia disappears. After first turning to Val and her father for help, Fran heads for the beauty parlor to find her. However, when Sylvia isn't there, Fran tracks her down at the at the hospital. When pressed, Sylvia admits she's been seeing a doctor here several times a week. And once her mom claims she isn't sick, Fran concludes that she must be having an affair.

15. Ma’Ternal Affairs

Suspecting that her mother is having an affair, Fran poses as a patient in order to meet Dr. Joe Rasso for herself. Upon discovering that the widowed doctor is far more attractive than her dad is, Fran worries. And despite Maxwell's suggestion that she not get involved, Fran decides to confront Sylvia. Meanwhile, after agreeing to direct Grace's school play, C.C. persuades Niles to fill in for a sick cast member. When Fran refuses to accept that her mother has fallen in love with Dr. Rasso, she and Sylvia stop speaking. But after they both show up at the play, Val helps Fran and her mom to make amends as Niles is stricken with stage fright. So, in an effort to restore the romance that has been missing from their marriage, Fran persuades Morty to take Sylvia out for a romantic wedding anniversary dinner. While at the Skylight Room with Fran and Maxwell, Morty's romantic overtures make Sylvia uncomfortable. When Morty retreats to the bathroom, Fran follows him and is stunned to see Dr. Rasso in there, too. Encouraging Morty demonstrate his love for Sylvia, the doctor wisely bows out. Finally, a serenade by Morty convinces Sylvia that there's still some excitement left in their marriage.

16. The Producers

With a friend's new play in hand, Niles asks to team up with Maxwell in order to have it produced. When Maxwell rebuffs his request, Niles tells Fran that he wants to be a successful producer in order to impress a woman. And upon learning that the object of his desire is C.C., Fran steps in to help out. Meanwhile, after Maxwell overhears her complaints about Fran, he insists that C.C. be nice to his wife or risk losing their partnership. As C.C. attempts to use the children to get back in Maxwell's good graces, Fran sets out to help Niles by landing aging soap opera star Victoria Davis to star in the play. Claiming to be Maxwell and C.C., Fran and Niles then rent a theater for their show. But when they unknowingly run afoul of some union regulations, the production company is fined $225,000. When C.C. makes it clear she's ready to do anything to keep her partnership with Maxwell alive, Fran tries getting her to repair the damage before he finds out. Preferring to let Fran take the blame herself, C.C. refuses. So, after Brighton softens up his dad, Fran breaks the news. And after Maxwell steps in to clean up the mess and get the charges dropped, a successful opening night gives Niles the courage to ask C.C. to be his bride.

17. The Dummy Twins

After taking Fran's advice and asking C.C. to be his bride, Niles is stunned when she turns him down. With Niles humiliated, Maxwell criticizes Fran for butting in. But, as their doctor recommends that the Sheffields start practicing with a pair of dolls for when they finally become the parents of twins, Niles insists that Fran get C.C. to fall in love with him. Having promised not to get involved, Fran enlists Grace and Brighton to help give Niles her suggestions on how to woo C.C. With some encouragement from Fran, C.C. agrees to a dinner date with Niles. However, when he proposes again and C.C. turns him down, Niles decides to quit. And under orders from Maxwell, Fran must get him to reconsider. Though C.C. won't listen to Fran, she does respond when the request comes from Maxwell. However, once she and Niles return to their constant criticism of one another, C.C. agrees that she's let the best years of her life go by and quits her partnership with Maxwell. Meanwhile, as he and Fran argue over their ability to care for twins, Maxwell realizes he can't let either C.C. or Niles go. And when he and Fran go to convince them to stay, they find them in bed together.

18. Maggie's Wedding

After announcing that he's going to work in Japan for a year, Maggie's boyfriend asks her to get married. While the women couldn't be happier, Maxwell is upset. Yet, despite his objections, Fran, Sylvia and Val forge ahead with the wedding plans. And with some help from Fran, Maggie persuades her dad to go along with her marrying Michael. Meanwhile, even though Niles is away in London, news of his affair with C.C. continues to spread. On the day of the wedding, Fran is stunned to learn that Michael has invited his cousin, actor James Brolin. And after realizing that Brolin is bringing his wife, Barbra Streisand, the shock sends Fran into labor. While Fran is relieved to learn that it was only a false alarm, the doctor insists that she spend the night in the hospital. But she immediately starts plotting to return home for the wedding so she can finally meet Streisand. After sending Maxwell out for food, Fran sneaks out of bed and heads for the wedding. But back at home, everyone is gone. And to make matters worse, Maxwell calls to announce that he brought all the guests, including Streisand, to the hospital as a surprise. Finally, at the rescheduled wedding the following day, Fran is forced to live with the knowledge that she missed a chance to hear her idol sing in person.

19. Yetta's Lettas

After learning that his new play won't be staged as planned, Maxwell is stuck with an expensive theater he's rented. However, when C.C. announces that bitter rival Andrew Lloyd Webber has offered to take it off his hands, Malcolm refuses and sets out to find something else to produce. Meanwhile, as Niles and C.C. struggle to keep their affair a secret, a package of old letters reveals that Yetta was in love with someone other than the man she married. Seeing Maxwell desperately searching for a new play prompts Fran to suggest that he do something with the letters detailing Yetta's love affair. Maxwell isn't interested, but after Fran mistakenly sends them to Andrew Lloyd Webber, he is. And when Sylvia reveals that she has Yetta's power of attorney, Maxwell must then negotiate with her for the letters just to keep Sir Andrew from going ahead. After securing the rights to Yetta's story, Maxwell finally has a hit play to outdo Webber. But when Fran suggests making it into a movie, Maxwell has some stiff competition in Steven Speilberg. Finally, C.C.'s infatuation with Niles leads her to recommend the butler's new play to Maxwell.

20. The Baby Shower

With twins on the way and her hormones raging out of control, Fran prepares for a baby shower. However, she worries after a psychic predicts that Maxwell is going to leave her for a blonde. And despite Sylvia's efforts to dismiss it, Libby's accurate forecast of Val's future doesn't do anything to ease Fran's mind. Meanwhile, Brighton asks Fran to tell Maxwell that he doesn't want to attend Harvard in the fall. At the shower, Fran ignores her guests as she anxiously waits for Libby to reveal the name of the other woman. And while Niles insists that her husband is madly in love and has no intention of leaving her, both he and Fran are stunned when Libby identifies the mystery woman as C.C. -- who's in California on a business trip with Maxwell! So, as Brighton begs for help breaking his news to Maxwell, Fran and Niles pack their bags for Los Angeles where they plan to break up the alleged affair. Upon arriving at the hotel, Fran is stunned to find C.C. asleep in Maxwell's bed. As Fran learns that they switched rooms, Niles discovers Maxwell asleep in C.C.'s room. Leaving C.C. and Niles in California together, Maxwell and Fran return home to where Brighton tells his dad about wanting to take a year off before going to college. And while Maxwell initially balks at the idea, Fran persuades him to give Brighton some space to make his own decisions.

21. Finale: Part 1

With the approach of their first wedding anniversary, Fran is upset at how large being pregnant has made her. While Maxwell tries to be sympathetic, he cannot resist joining Niles in making cruel jokes behind her back. As Fran hopes that the move to California will distract her, Grace nears the end of her psychotherapy with trepidation. And while Grace is saying her good-byes, Fran uses the opportunity to seek Dr. Bort's advice for her own problems. Meanwhile, in an effort to take her mind off her weight, Fran and Niles plan a surprise anniversary party for Maxwell. At the party, Fran's father embarrasses both her and Sylvia with his toast to the happy couple. Seizing the romance of the moment, Niles again asks C.C. to be his bride. Although she doesn't turn him down, C.C. quickly runs away. In an effort to find out what's the matter, Fran tracks her down. And after encouraging her to say yes, Fran is surprised when the elevator she and C.C. are riding in suddenly malfunctions. In the panic that follows, Fran goes into labor. Though hoping for a speedy rescue, both women worry that the twins may have to be delivered in the elevator. And as Fran encourages C.C. to take a chance and say yes to marriage, Maxwell is comforting Niles, who's sure he's been rejected one more time. Hearing Fran scream, Maxwell realizes something is wrong. And as he attempts to summon help, Fran and C.C. do their best to find the courage they'll need to bring the twins into the world if necessary.

22. Finale: Part 2

As she begs Fran not to deliver her babies while they are stuck in an elevator, C.C. decides to give Niles an answer to his marriage proposal. Although Fran's screaming makes it difficult, C.C. manages to tell Niles that she'll marry him. However, after Niles uses an amazing display of strength to open the elevator doors to retrieve C.C., Maxwell cannot get Fran out before they close again. But when he finally does rescue his wife, Maxwell rushes her to the hospital where everyone anxiously awaits the birth of the twins. Meanwhile, following Niles's proposal, C.C. can't seem to shake a nauseous feeling. With Sylvia and Yetta providing encouragement, Fran's labor proceeds. While Niles wonders if his proposal is at the root of her nausea, C.C. turns to Fran for advice. And after Fran suggests that the sick feeling will disappear once she's married, C.C. decides to have her wedding right there in the labor room. Meanwhile, Fran asks Val to be the twin's godmother. As Fran finally delivers a healthy boy and girl, C.C. is feeling much better since marrying Niles. However, when her doctor drops by with the results of her tests, C.C. learns that the cause of her nausea is a pregnancy of her own. Finally, following the birth of the babies, Brighton and Maggie are off to Europe as Fran, Maxwell and Grace prepare to leave New York for their new home in Los Angeles.
