O Xangô de Baker Street

As Vidas de Chico Xavier

The film begins in 1970 when Chico Xavier is 60 years old. While he is getting ready to an interview in a television show he talks to Emmanuel, his spiritual guide. Chico complains that he is tired but Emmanuel insists that this is his mission. The presenter introduces Chico and we learn from him that Chico was born in 1910 in Pedro Leopoldo a small town; that he has been psychographing several books since 1927 and with the money he earned from the selling of the books he opened a Communion Center that helps sick, old and starving poor people. Then, the film goes back and forth to Chico's childhood in Sao Leopoldo and to the TV show. When Chico was about 7 after his mother died he lived with his godmother, Rita for a while. It was a difficult period because the boy used to see and talk to spirits, including his mother. Rita used get very upset about it and used to beat and torture the child. One day finally his father takes him to live with him, his brothers and sisters and his new wife, Cidalia. When his new stepmother sees the bruises she promises Chico that no one will ever beat him again. A great friendship with Cidalia begins. Throughout the film we see many situations such as a teacher that could not believe that his composition was dictated to him, a widow of a famous writer that had prosecuted him and many journalists who had persecuted him his whole life. The film tells the story of his life, which was a life devoted to the poor and shows how he became well known and loved throughout the country.

The House of Sand

Áurea (Fernanda Torres) arrives in 1910 with her husband at a labyrinth of sand in Maranhão, northern Brazil, her only female company being her mother, Dona Maria (Fernanda Montenegro). After spending many years looking for a way out, she witnesses the death of her husband and, believing herself to be free, goes in search of a small settlement founded by runaway slaves. Here she meets Massu, who becomes an important companion for the two women, and Chico, who brings salt from afar. A girl is born, also called Maria, but Áurea remains committed to leaving. A surprise encounter with a young guide leading a group of scientists suggests a chance to restart her life. But once again, circumstances beyond her will force Áurea to remain on the sandy plains. Alongside Massu, she discovers that she does belong here, after all.

The musical movement reached its peak in 1962, when it definitively became international in a concert at Carnegie Hall (New York). Featuring exclusive interviews and presentations by Roberto Menescal, Carlos Lyra, João Donato, Alaíde Costa, Johnny Alf, Kay Lira, Leny Andrade, Chris Delano, Joyce, Sergio Ricardo, Billy Blanco - all living remnants of the time and some current followers -, Coisa Mais Linda contains archive images of shows, international performances, as well as foreign artists who participated in this movement at the time.
